Following devices to use:

  • figurative devices (metaphor, personification, simile)
  • sentence starts and structures (you want ‘flow’)
  • precise verb choices
  • word connotations for tone and mood (be consistent. extend the metaphor)
  • consistent tense and verb form use
  • ‘showing’ the reader the scene – don’t say ‘night’ say ‘the flicker of moonlight on broken glass’
  • accurate use of the various parts of speech (noun, adjective, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction, subject, article)
  • avoid cliche moments. be original

house is ‘defeated’ – beaten, broken and tired. It has seen too much, too many seasons, too many

neglected delinquents.

Smell: dampness, stale stagnant air

Sounds: creaking floors,

See: water stains on walls, broken glass, peeling paint, crumbling brick, graffiti, Scattered bottles and old cigarettes

plot twist – you remember when these walls weren’t peeled and the floor didn’t creak. You reflect on the good and bad times this house has

Its charm is hidden behind broken doors and windows.

Barely upright, the house stands defeated. Battered and broken, beaten and tired, it has seen too many seasons, faced too many battles. It does not hide its battle scars
