Define the following key terms:
Sentence – a set of words that is complete in itself, typically containing a subject and article, conveying a statement, question, exclamation, or command, and consisting of a main clause and sometimes one or more subordinate clauses.
Syntax – the arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences in a language.
Simple – A simple sentence contains one independent clause. It contains a subject and a predicate.
Compound – A compound sentence contains more than one subject and more than one predicate. Will always have conjunction.
Complex – A complex sentence is a sentence that contains an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. An independent clause can stand alone as a sentence, but a dependent clause even though it has a subject and a verb cannot stand alone.
Minor – a word, phrase, or clause functioning as a sentence and having in speech an intonation characteristic of a sentence but lacking the grammatical completeness and independence of a full sentence
Independent Clause – a clause that can form a complete sentence standing alone, having a subject and a predicate.
Dependent Clause – A dependent clause is a group of words that also contains a subject and a verb, but it is not a complete thought.
Marker Word – Discourse markers (words like ‘however’, ‘although’ and ‘Nevertheless’) are referred to more commonly as ‘linking words’ and ‘linking phrases’, or ‘sentence connectors’. The marker is the word that determines the relationship between the dependent and independent clause.
Description of our english classroom using only simple sentences
The chairs are green. The desks are blue. The classroom is warm. Posters decorate the walls. Glass windows frame the room. We sit around the class in a circle.
Posters decorate the walls while glass windows frame the room. We sit around the class in a circle on the chairs that are green. The classroom is warm and our class is loud.
Windows surround the classrooms to let in lots of light. Our class is loud because people are talking. The classroom is toasty warm because the heaters are blasting. Posters artistically decorate the walls because Mrs Plunkett is creative. There are green chairs underneath the blue desk.
